Data from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Japan Financial Intelligence and Education Promotion Agency (J-FLEC) highlight significant disparities in Japanese household savings and asset holdings. Initial reports on two-or-more-person households show that while the average savings balance reached 20.59 million yen in 2025, the median value was notably lower at 12.64 million yen. This indicates that approximately 66.1% of households fall below the average, driven by a small number of high-wealth households. Subsequent data focusing on single-person households reveals similar disparities. For individuals in their 30s and 40s, the median savings value is only 1 million yen, despite average savings of 5.01 million and 8.59 million yen for those age groups, respectively. Approximately 32% of single individuals in these brackets hold no financial assets. Recent statistics further detail the challenges facing retirees. While the Japan Pension Service reports a standard couple's pension of approximately 237,279 yen per month, Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications data indicates that the average monthly expenditure for unemployed couples aged 65 and older is roughly 296,829 yen, suggesting a potential monthly deficit. Even with a monthly pension of 250,000 yen, retirees may still face deficits if they maintain standard spending patterns. Disparities also exist between pension types. The average monthly receipt for Employees' Pension is approximately 151,142 yen, roughly double the full National Pension amount of 76,088 yen. Employees' Pension may include a ‘dependency addition’ (kakyu nenkin) of up to 423,700 yen annually for those with dependents. Regarding elderly care, while 66.5% of nursing homes have monthly fees within the average Employees' Pension range, only 14.4% cost less than 100,000 yen.
