Students across Japan are participating in various programs designed to support regional revitalization and local development. In culinary contests, high school students in Wakkanai and Fukushima are using local ingredients, such as Soya beef and sake lees, to promote regional resources and support reconstruction efforts in Tomioka Town. Further culinary engagement includes elementary students at Shirahama Elementary School, who participated in a remote education program organized by Kikkoman Corporation and the professional education group ‘Pro-Gaku’. These students developed new regional dish concepts, such as ‘Ootaniwatari Mozuku Soba’ using local fish and seaweed, and a ‘Juicy’ dish featuring local pork and black purple rice. In Aomori Prefecture, students from Hirosaki Jitsugyo High School are competing for a third consecutive victory in the ‘Gotochi! Zeppin Umaimon Koshien’ cooking competition. Their entry, ‘Haru Matsu Megoi Nari’, is an innovative take on traditional inari sushi that incorporates Aomori yams, local corn, and pork seasoned with traditional chili pepper paste to represent the Tsugaru landscape. In other academic settings, university students are engaging in practical problem-solving. In Higashihiroshima, students are collaborating with local companies and media outlets to improve information dissemination through social media and generative AI. Additionally, students at Tokai University are participating in intellectual book review competitions to advance toward national finals.
