Weekly Japanese video game sales data for late August and early September 2026 show fluctuations in both hardware and software performance. During the week of August 17 to August 23, hardware shipments saw a decline, with the Nintendo Switch 2 leading sales at 20,734 units. In software, ‘Rhythm Heaven Groove’ held the top position with 37,402 copies sold, while ‘Steins;Gate Reboot’ saw significant debuts on both Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. In the week of August 24 to August 30, ‘Rhythm Heaven Groove’ maintained its lead on the Nintendo Switch with 34,688 units. Software rankings included the debut of ‘Elden Ring Tarnished Edition’ for Nintendo Switch 2 in second place, followed by ‘Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2’, which recorded 26,905 combined units across PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch. Hardware sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 rose to 22,265 units, outpacing the original Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. For the week of September 7 to September 13, the Nintendo Switch 2 continued to lead the hardware market with 28,341 units sold. In software, ‘Rhythm Heaven Groove’ remained in first place on the Nintendo Switch with 24,756 copies. By the week of September 28 to October 4, ‘Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve’ took the top software spot with 63,013 units sold on PlayStation 5. While the title reached one million global sales faster than any other in the franchise, its Japanese debut was lower than its predecessor, which sold nearly 160,000 units on PS4 in its first week. Other notable software included ‘Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered’ and Nintendo titles ‘Rhythm Heaven Groove’ and ‘Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave’. In hardware, the Nintendo Switch 2 led with 26,200 units, followed by the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition with 12,210 units. For the week of October 5 to October 11, the Nintendo Switch 2 remained the leading hardware with 22,420 units sold, followed by the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition at 11,611 units. In software, ‘Kingdom Hearts Collection [I ~ III]’ led the charts with 23,411 units sold on the Switch 2.
