The Netflix revival of the sitcom ‘A Different World’ reached the number one spot in the United States, featuring original cast members Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison. The series, which premiered on September 24, brings back iconic characters like Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne to Hillman College while introducing a new generation of students. Following the premiere, Guy faced social media scrutiny and age-shaming regarding her appearance compared to her 1980s portrayal of Whitley Gilbert. Guy addressed the criticism on Instagram, noting that “the internet can be brutal to women as we grow older” and stating that “it asks us to celebrate life while criticizing every sign that we’ve lived it.” She further emphasized that “beauty, style, and joy don’t have an expiration date,” encouraging followers to focus on making memories rather than judgment. The discourse surrounding her appearance has sparked broader discussions regarding ageism and beauty standards imposed on Black women in the entertainment industry. In support of the actress, Melyssa Ford joined the defense, labeling critics as “internet gangsters” and calling out internalized misogyny. Ford argued that women are often unfairly judged regardless of whether they choose to undergo cosmetic procedures or age naturally. Additionally, hosts of ‘The View’, including Whoopi Goldberg, offered praise for the actresses involved. In a subsequent event, Guy was honored at a special screening of the series in Atlanta, Georgia, where her cultural impact and personal history—including providing a recovery space for the late Tupac Shakur in 1994—were highlighted.
