The career of Spanish actor Javier Bardem has seen recent visibility through both retrospective celebrations and new film releases. In Lisbon, the 6th edition of the Claquete Cinema Cycle, organized by Montepio Associação Mutualista, scheduled a series of free screenings starting September 3. The event aimed to showcase Bardem’s work with various international directors, featuring films such as ‘Carne Trémula’ and ‘Mar Adentro’. Simultaneously, Bardem has received renewed attention following the release of ‘El ser querido’ (also referred to as ‘L’essere amato’), directed by Rodrigo Sorogoyen. The production, which received a Palme d'Or nomination at the Cannes Film Festival, features Bardem as Esteban Martínez, a legendary and controversial film director with a history marked by “violence and excess.” The film explores the complex relationship between Martínez and his daughter, an actress, as they work together on a film set. Discussing the role, Bardem addressed themes of patriarchy and toxic masculinity, noting that the character reflects behaviors rooted in historical education that persist globally. Building on this momentum, Bardem is set to receive a Career Award at the 21st Rome Film Fest, held from October 13 to 25, 2026, at the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone. The ~~announcement was made by Salvatore Nastasi, President of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, following a proposal by Artistic Director Paola Malanga. The~~ award will be presented by Academy Award-winning director Paolo Sorrentino. As part of the festival, Bardem will present a screening of ‘El ser querido’ within the ‘Best of 2026’ section. The film, a Spanish-French co-production starring Bardem and Victoria Luengo, is scheduled for theatrical release in Italy on November 12, 2026, distributed by Movies Inspired.
