JCB Hydromax hydrogen land speed record

Overview

The JCB Hydromax, a hydrogen-powered streamliner, established a new land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Driven by Andy Green, the vehicle achieved an average speed of 406.320 mph, more than doubling the previous hydrogen internal combustion record of 185.5 mph set in 2004.

Technologically, the Hydromax distinguishes itself from fuel-cell vehicles by utilizing two production-based hydrogen internal combustion engines producing a combined 1,600 bhp. The project, which involved components from the German company Poppe + Potthoff, serves as a demonstration of hydrogen combustion technology under extreme mechanical and thermal loads.

JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford noted that the achievement demonstrates that hydrogen combustion can function at a high level with “zero CO2 emissions at the tailpipe.” The endeavor is part of a larger £100 million hydrogen development program intended to provide clean power alternatives for heavy construction and agricultural machinery where battery weight may be a limiting factor.
