Jeanne Calment longevity record

Overview

Jeanne Louise Calment, a French woman born in 1875, is recognized as the oldest person in recorded history, having lived to the age of 122 years and 164 days before her death in 1997. Her lifespan has been verified through historical documentation and civil records.

Her extreme longevity had significant financial implications for others, such as a 1965 life annuity agreement in Arles. In that deal, a notary named André-François Raffret agreed to pay Calment a monthly sum in exchange for her apartment upon her death. Because Calment lived much longer than expected, the total payments made by Raffret and his widow eventually exceeded the apartment’s market value.

Calment’s lifestyle was characterized by activities such as cycling after age 100 and fencing at age 88. Her diet included olive oil, chocolate, and nightly wine, and she continued smoking until age 117.
