A Pennsylvania judge has scheduled an evidentiary hearing for September 8 in Bellefonte to address claims that an accuser of former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky intends to recant his testimony. Sandusky is currently serving a 30-to-60-year prison sentence following his 2012 conviction on 45 counts of child sexual abuse. The accuser, identified in court documents as R. R. (or Victim 10) and later as Ryan Rittmeyer, filed a sworn affidavit alleging that his original testimony resulted from “suggestive leading questioning, prosecutorial coercion and influence, confirmatory bias and memory manipulation.” In a June 2025 affidavit, Rittmeyer stated he had no “clear or certain” memory of sexual abuse during initial police interviews and alleged that investigators used psychological pressure and “memory work” to encourage him to reframe his allegations. He further claimed he was extensively coached by authorities and could “safely affirm details I did not fully recall.” Sandusky’s legal team is using this recantation to support an amended Post-Conviction Relief Act petition, alleging prosecutorial misconduct and claiming that financial incentives and institutional pressure influenced the original allegations. In a recent development, While Sandusky is seeking to withdraw from the scheduled September 8 Centre County hearing to instead seek relief in federal court. court, the hearing remains a focal point for his defense team’s effort to secure a new trial. While Sandusky has maintained his innocence, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office has described the proposed recantation as “highly suspect.” Legal experts note that the court must determine how this testimony affects the broader case, which involved multiple victims and charges.
