A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Jagdalpur has issued verdicts regarding the 2013 Jhiram Ghati Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh. The attack targeted a Congress party ‘Parivartan Yatra’ convoy, resulting in the deaths of approximately 29 people, including senior political figures Nand Kumar Patel, Mahendra Karma, and Vidya Charan Shukla. On September 5, 2026, the court convicted 10 individuals under various charges, including the Indian Penal Code, the Arms Act, the Explosive Substances Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Following the reservation of the sentencing order, the court on September 16, 2026, sentenced all 10 convicts to death for their involvement in the massacre, which involved landmine explosions and heavy gunfire. Presided over by Special Judge Ajay Singh Rajput, the court found the accused guilty of criminal conspiracy, murder, and violations of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence from 101 witnesses. While 11 individuals were originally charged, one died during the legal proceedings. The 10 convicted individuals, which include two women, have been granted 30 days to appeal the decision in the High Court, where the death sentences must receive statutory confirmation.
