Joana Vasconcelos exhibition at MAAT

Overview

The Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon has inaugurated the exhibition ‘VENUS – Valentino Garavani through the eyes of Joana Vasconcelos’ as part of its 10th-anniversary celebrations. The exhibition, which runs until February 22, is a collaboration between the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation and the Portuguese sculptor.

The showcase features a dialogue between contemporary sculpture and high fashion, presenting over 40 haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces from the Valentino Garavani estate alongside Vasconcelos’s works. A central element is the 13-meter textile sculpture ‘Valkyrie Venus’.

Vasconcelos’s contributions include iconic pieces such as ‘Marilyn’ and ‘Coração Independente #3’. The artist noted that her process involves decontextualizing everyday objects to explore the paradox between the domestic and the luxurious, contrasting the private woman with the public identity transformed by Valentino couture.
