Global musical tributes continue to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, born September 23, 1926. Coltrane is recognized as a transformative figure in jazz and rock, noted for his technical mastery, modal concepts, and spiritual approach to music. His work often reflected the social and political tensions of his era, exemplified by his composition ‘Alabama,’ written in response to the 1963 church bombing in Birmingham. In Philadelphia, where Coltrane spent formative years in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood, the city is hosting a series of events including film screenings, concerts, poetry readings, and lectures. International celebrations include a ‘Tribute to John Coltrane’ in Tarnów, Poland, and an upcoming concert in Bari, Italy, titled ‘John Coltrane – L’eredità di un suono infinito’ at the Conservatorio Niccolò Piccinni on October 2. This performance, coordinated by Fabrizio Savino, will feature faculty and students from the Jazz Music School performing arrangements of Coltrane’s work. New musical releases and retrospectives have emerged to mark the milestone. These include a massive box set of historic Miles Davis and John Coltrane Columbia recordings spanning 1955 to 1961, and the release of ‘The Tiberi Tapes’ by Impulse! Records on November 6. Additionally, the British magazine Mojo has released a career retrospective, including a ranking of Coltrane’s ten best albums, tracing his evolution from early influences like Charlie Parker to his avant-garde explorations. As 2026 also marks the centenary of Miles Davis, several tributes are honoring both legends. In Sicily, musician Giovanni Falzone has released ‘Suite for Miles’, an album inspired by Davis’s ‘Dark Magus’. Furthermore, the 27th AngraJazz festival in Portugal, scheduled for October 2 to 4, will honor the legacies of both Davis and Coltrane through a diverse program, including the Orquestra Angrajazz performance ‘Miles & Gil’.
