John Hinckley Jr., who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981, provided rare reflections on the incident during an interview on ‘The Mark Joseph Show’ podcast. Hinckley described his past motivations as ‘delusional,’ explaining that he committed the shooting in an attempt to form a ‘union’ with actress Jodie Foster following her role in ‘Taxi Driver.’ He stated, ‘I just wish Jodie Foster well... I hope she has a good life.’

Hinckley also noted that while Ronald Reagan had expressed interest in visiting him at St. Elizabeths Hospital after the shooting, hospital officials reportedly advised the President, ‘please don’t do that.’ Hinckley clarified that he held no animosity toward Reagan and viewed a meeting as an opportunity to seek forgiveness.

The 1981 shooting at the Washington Hilton caused severe injuries to President Reagan and wounded White House press secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy, and police officer Thomas Delahanty. Hinckley was previously found not guilty by reason of mental illness and was discharged from a psychiatric hospital in 2016, with all court restrictions lifted six years later.
