Musician Johnny Marr is auctioning a significant portion of his personal guitar collection through Christie’s in London. The collection, titled ‘Guitars: The Johnny Marr Collection’, includes items spanning his five-decade career with The Smiths, The The, and as a solo artist. In the recent auction, two prominent guitars sold for over £560,000. The 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo, used during the recording of The Smiths’ debut album and famously lent to Noel Gallagher for the Oasis ‘Supersonic’ single cover, fetched £358,400. This price was more than four times its initial estimate following a bidding war lasting over five minutes. A 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, a gift from Sire Records founder Seymour Stein, also exceeded expectations by selling for £204,800 against an estimate of £100,000 to £150,000. The instrument served as the inspiration for the music of ‘Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now’. The auction featured approximately 80 items, including guitars, concert posters, and gold and platinum records. Marr previously described the decision to sell as ‘bittersweet’, expressing a desire for the gear to be played by new owners rather than remaining in storage. The five-hour event concluded with a total sale of £3,649,280, significantly exceeding original presale estimates. Bidders from 34 different countries participated in the auction. Proceeds from 31 specific lots, comprising 10 guitars and various memorabilia, will be split equally between The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and The National Autistic Society.
