Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks initially missed several consecutive practices due to general soreness. Despite his history of significant injuries, head coach Dave Canales expressed optimism regarding Brooks’ availability for the team’s season opener against the Chicago Bears. However, Brooks’ status worsened following a groin injury sustained during a game against the Atlanta Falcons. He is now set to undergo core muscle surgery and will be placed on injured reserve, which is expected to sideline him for at least six weeks. The Panthers are looking toward With Brooks and Trevor Etienne both on injured reserve, the Panthers’ backfield depth is significantly reduced. Chuba Hubbard is expected to lead the backfield and are considering workouts for former running backs such take over primary duties, with veteran AJ Dillon serving as the main backup. In response to the shortage, the Panthers invited veteran free agent Austin Ekeler. Ekeler for a workout; while the workout was reportedly successful, the team has not yet signed him to a contract.
