Following his run in Montreal, where he secured a spot in the round of 16 by defeating Casper Ruud, Fonseca began competing in the 2026 Cincinnati Masters 1000. On 16 August, the 19-year-old Brazilian advanced to the third round by defeating Botic van de Zandschulp, matching Gustavo Kuerten’s achievement of ten wins in a single Masters 1000 season. However, Fonseca subsequently withdrew from Cincinnati after reporting abdominal pain during training. While he initially focused on rehabilitation in Rio de Janeiro to prepare for the US Open, his participation in the Grand Slam remained unconfirmed as he celebrated his 20th birthday on 21 August. On 24 August, Fonseca officially withdrew from the US Open. Now ranked 26th in the world, he stated that after medical examinations and the commencement of treatment, it became clear to him and his team that he “requires more time to recover fully to compete at a high level”. This withdrawal marks the only Grand Slam tournament he will miss in 2026, following a strong season that included a quarterfinal run at Roland Garros, where he defeated Novak Djokovic. This abdominal injury marks the fifth time this season that Fonseca has been sidelined by physical issues, following previous problems with his lower back, wrist, and shoulder. His absence is expected to impact his ATP ranking, as he is projected to lose 50 points from his 2025 performance. Regarding his recovery, the Brazilian Tennis Confederation (CBT) has announced that Fonseca has joined the squad for the upcoming Davis Cup tie against Switzerland. Team captain Jaime Oncins confirmed Fonseca’s availability for the September 18–19 confrontation in Rio de Janeiro, noting that his presence provides a significant boost to the team.
