The municipality of João Pessoa has expanded its ‘Academia da Cidade’ (City Gym) program by inaugurating a third free unit at Praça da Paz in the Bancários neighborhood. Managed by the Secretariat of Youth, Sport and Recreation, the facility offers supervised weight training and physical activities to promote public health. This new location joins existing units in Cabo Branco and Colinas do Sul, which collectively serve nearly 20,000 monthly users. Mayor Leo Bezerra has announced plans to further expand the program, including increasing capacity at the Orla unit and establishing new poles across the city. To enhance user support, the administration intends to integrate health professionals, such as nutritionists and physiotherapists, into the program. In terms of infrastructure and mobility, the city is advancing projects for Bus Rapid System (BRS) corridors and integration terminals in Bessa and Cristo Redentor, supported by funding from the French Development Agency. The bidding process for two road corridors is currently underway. Additionally, the Seinfra department has launched a road maintenance operation covering 49 neighborhoods to repair potholes and improve drainage. Paving works have also commenced in the Lagoa dos Pretos community, supported by a R$ 1.5 million investment. Social and cultural programming remains a priority. The administration is conducting the Municipal Youth Week to provide professional training and employment opportunities for residents aged 15 to 29, alongside events like the IV Student Music Festival. To support local employment, Sine-JP has announced 651 job vacancies across various sectors. Furthermore, the ‘Você Prefeito’ program continues to utilize public hearings to allow residents to participate in regional planning. Recent social initiatives also include public hearings focused on combating violence against women, traffic safety educational campaigns, and the expansion of vocational training in gastronomy through Sedest.
