The narrative follows José Mourinho’s involvement in high-level European football, specifically regarding his professional relationship with former player Cristi Chivu and his leadership at Real Madrid. In a UEFA Champions League match at the Santiago Bernabéu, Mourinho managed Real Madrid in a 2-1 victory over Chivu’s Inter Milan. The match highlighted the professional history between the two, who previously worked together during Inter’s 2010 Champions League success. Mourinho’s return to Real Madrid, thirteen years after his previous tenure, follows his decision to reject an offer to lead the Portugal national team. While the Portuguese Football Federation had entered discussions with Mourinho following Roberto Martínez’s departure, he opted to return to the Bernabéu after Real Madrid paid his release clause at Benfica. Portugal subsequently appointed Jorge Jesus. Tasked with restoring stability after two trophyless seasons, Mourinho’s second spell has faced immediate La Liga challenges. Following defeats to Atletico Madrid and Real Betis, the club sits fourth, six points behind leaders FC Barcelona. To address defensive issues caused by injuries to players such as Raul Asencio and Eder Militão, Mourinho has reportedly requested the club break its tradition of avoiding winter transfers to sign a central defender in January. Recent performance data shows Real Madrid has conceded goals in seven of its first eight matches of the 2026-27 season. These defensive struggles are attributed to a lack of midfield control and an unresolved balance between creativity and protection. While players like Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni provide physical security, the squad lacks a natural controller similar to former midfielders Toni Kroos or Luka Modric, leaving the defense vulnerable during transitions. Amid these struggles, former player Wesley Sneijder has expressed public confidence in the manager, stating he believes Mourinho is ~~“the~~ ‘the only one capable of revitalizing the team.” Mourinho has also addressed the professional demands of the modern game, emphasizing that players must maintain a professional mindset 24 hours a day, noting that lifestyle choices regarding diet, sleep, and recreation directly impact performance. team.’
