The Junior World Open Water Swimming Championships were held in Santa Fe, Argentina, at Parque del Sur Lake from September 3 to 6, 2026. The event featured a record-breaking participation of 273 athletes from 39 countries. Prior to the event, Colombian swimmer Sara Sofía Fajardo Camargo was selected for the national team following a victory in the 5-kilometer category at the national championships. During the opening stages of the competition, Hungary achieved significant success in the 10-kilometer races. In the older junior category, Mate Karpati won gold, followed by Colin Jacobson of the USA in second and Arthur Aguiar of Brazil in third. In the younger junior category, Bálint Kreisz secured gold and Armand Attila Marosszekei took second. In the 5km women’s category (ages 14-15), fourteen-year-old Argentine swimmer Sofía Ovalles won a bronze medal with a time of 1 hour and 37 seconds. This marked the first time an athlete from the San Juan province reached a podium in a world championship debut. The gold medal in that race was won by Russia’s Kira Guseva, with compatriot Anastasiia Siniakova finishing second. The competition included various distances distances, including 7.5-kilometer races, 3-kilometer knockout sprints, and 4 x 1500-meter mixed relays. Technical aspects of the event included the use of specialized electronic touchpads mounted on floating pontoons, which required between 1.5 and 2.5 kg of pressure to register a finish, working alongside athlete wrist transponders. The Chilean national junior delegation participated in several categories. Ricardo Gutiérrez achieved the highest placement for the Chilean team, finishing 24th in the men's 10k. Other Chilean participants included Diego Moncada (39th) and Gaspar Henríquez (40th) in the men's 7.5k, and Eloísa Godoy, who finished 34th in the women's 7.5k and 40th in the 3k Knockout Sprint.
