Jurassic flightless bird fossil discovery in China

Overview

Researchers have identified a new species of flightless Jurassic bird, named ‘Yuezhuornis yangyuanensis’, in Zhenghe, Fujian Province. The discovery resulted from a collaboration between the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Fujian Institute of Geological Sciences following a four-year excavation.

The crow-sized fossil exhibits a combination of avian and dinosaur-like traits, including serrated teeth similar to meat-eating deinonychosaurs and a specialized second toe with a curved, sickle-shaped claw.

This finding challenges the scientific consensus that bird evolution was primarily driven by the development of flight. Instead, the evidence suggests that early avian evolution involved complex adaptations to diverse environments, including ground-based lifestyles where flight was lost.
