The $20 million Group 1 The Everest at Randwick concluded with an upset victory by the mare Tempted. Trained by Ciaron Maher for the Godolphin empire, the four-year-old won the world’s richest turf race by a head, paying $7 on the TAB. Tempted defeated the heavy favourite, Ka Ying Rising, who entered the race as the $1.50 favourite and was rated the number one horse in the world. Despite concerns from trainer David Hayes regarding track conditions, the race was held on a soft 5-rated track. Ka Ying Rising, ridden by Zac Purton from barrier 11, finished in second place after settling in midfield following a wide draw. This defeat ended Ka Ying Rising’s 21-race winning streak. The victory represents a significant turnaround for Tempted, who finished second to Ka Ying Rising in the previous year’s edition of the race. The tenth running of the event was held before a record crowd of over 52,000 spectators. The top five finishers were Tempted, Ka Ying Rising, Joliestar, Headwall, and Ninja. The 12-runner field competed for the $20 million prize pool in an event characterized by its unique slot-holder entry system. In a 2026 rematch, Tempted secured victory again in a dramatic repeat of the rivalry. Entering as the $6.50 second-favourite, the mare utilized barrier one to take an early lead in the straight, narrowly defeating Ka Ying Rising by a neck. While Ka Ying Rising attempted a strong late charge in pursuit of a 23rd win, the leader held on to secure Ciaron Maher’s second win in The Everest. Joliestar and Headwall finished third and fourth, respectively.
