South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada sustained a right hamstring injury during winter training, according to Cricket South Africa (CSA). Initially, the governing body announced that Rabada would undergo medical assessments to determine the severity of the injury and its impact on his availability for the upcoming international season, which included an ODI series against Australia and several Test matches. By late August, Rabada was officially ruled out of the ODI series against Australia and was deemed unlikely to participate in the subsequent three-match Test series. While CSA confirmed he is undergoing rehabilitation, reports from former cricketer Allan Donald suggest the player sustained a grade three tear, which could sideline him for at least two months. As of mid-September, Rabada has resumed bowling at a controlled pace during light training sessions, marking a significant step in his recovery. While this progress is positive, his availability for the three-match Test series starting October 9 remains uncertain. CSA stated that a decision regarding his participation will be made closer to the start date based on his continued progress. Lions bowling coach Allan Donald indicated the injury could potentially sideline Rabada for up to 10 weeks, making his readiness for the first Test at Kingsmead a race against time. On September 27, South Africa announced its preliminary 18-member squad for the upcoming three-match Test series against Australia, which includes Rabada despite his recent injury concerns. The squad faces other bowling absences, such as Lungi Ngidi, leading Marco Jansen to take on a more senior leadership role to provide stability. To address injury concerns among regular pacers—including Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka, and Ottneil Baartman—the selection features a large bowling group of seven fast bowlers. Rabada’s fitness will be specifically assessed during a two-day intra-squad match in Durban.
