KAI railway safety program and level crossing upgrades

Overview

Following a collision between the Argo Bromo Anggrek and a Commuterline train at Bekasi Timur Station, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) initiated safety measures based on recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT). These measures included the closure of 172 level crossings to enhance safety during investigations.

KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin indicated a focus on strengthening communication, safety procedures, and personnel training. The company also launched a broader safety program targeting 190 priority locations across Java and Sumatra, involving the installation of signage, safety equipment, and the deployment of certified crossing guards.

By October 2026, KAI Properti began operating nine new Jalur Pelintasan Langsung (JPL) stations within the Daop 1 Jakarta and Daop 2 Bandung regions. Civil works for the safety program reached a physical progress rate of 98.95 percent across 188 locations, supported by 739 certified crossing guards.
