Kakao AI development and ecosystem expansion
Overview
Kakao has initiated a new AI strategy focused on integrating intelligent agents into its KakaoTalk ecosystem. At the ‘if kakao 2026’ conference, the company introduced ‘Kanana Space’, an AI assistant for managing messages, schedules, and searches, alongside ‘Canvas’, a platform for users to build personalized AI agents. To support this ecosystem, Kakao is collaborating with a consortium of 34 partners, including LG Uplus and LG AI Research.
Following these announcements, Kakao released two versions of its ‘Kanana-2-vision-encoder’ technology as open source via Hugging Face. These models, available in ‘medium’ and ‘tiny’ sizes, reportedly outperformed several global competitors in benchmarks related to Korean optical character recognition, document understanding, and spatial awareness. Kakao intends to continue releasing components for its upcoming multimodal ‘Kanana-o’ model, which will process text, images, and voice.
