Kamoa Copper solar baseload plant launch

Overview

The Kamoa Copper mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo has launched Africa’s first 24/7 solar baseload facility. Developed by CrossBoundary Energy, the hybrid plant utilizes solar PV and battery energy storage to provide a dispatchable supply of power. The project aims to reduce the mine’s reliance on volatile diesel fuel costs and is expected to decrease annual CO2 emissions by approximately 78,750 tonnes.

This on-site microgrid is designed to mitigate regional power grid instability and reduce operational risks associated with transmission failures in the Central African Copperbelt. By providing continuous power, the facility allows for uninterrupted metallurgical processing and minimizes costly downtime for the mining operations.
