Kanye West concert cancellations in Russia

Overview

Two concerts by American rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye, scheduled for October 10 and 11 at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg, Russia, have been officially cancelled. The Moscow-based organizer, Say Agency, announced the cancellation via Telegram, stating the shows “cannot take place on the scheduled dates” and promising ticket refunds.

The cancellation follows significant political controversy and pressure. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova described the performances as “unacceptable” due to West’s past antisemitic remarks and perceived glorification of Nazi symbols. Additionally, State Duma deputy Nikolay Novichkov suggested the concerts should only proceed if the rapper demonstrated support for Russia’s military operations in Ukraine.

Conflicting reports emerged regarding the venue, as Gazprom Arena management denied having a rental agreement with the promoters. Furthermore, Russian law enforcement has reportedly launched a preliminary investigation into the organizers for potential fraud, as ticket sales allegedly began before necessary permits were secured.
