British adventurer Karl Bushby is nearing the conclusion of his 28-year ‘Goliath Expedition,’ a journey to walk around the world without motorized transport. Having departed from Punta Arenas, Chile, in 1998, Bushby has traveled approximately 50,000 kilometers through roughly 30 countries. Following his denial of passage through the Channel Tunnel, Bushby swam across the English Channel from France to reach the southern coast of England. On October 5, 2026, the 57-year-old former British Army paratrooper reached Shakespeare Beach near Dover under the supervision of British and French coast guards. He was met on the beach by family and filmmaker Werner Herzog, who is documenting the journey in a feature film titled ‘Walk of Life’. Throughout the expedition, Bushby has overcome significant obstacles, including the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and visa denials from Russia. His journey has also included crossing the Bering Strait on foot and swimming across the Caspian Sea. To fulfill his self-imposed rule of never returning home except on foot, Bushby must now complete a final walk of approximately 400 kilometers to reach his hometown of Hull, where he aims to reach his mother’s home.
