Karnataka state bus fare increases

Overview

Karnataka Transport Minister Byrati Suresh announced that state-owned transport bus fares would increase starting November 5 due to rising operational costs. The minister noted that diesel price hikes by the central government contributed to annual losses of 2,000 crore rupees for the state's four transport corporations, which faced total losses of 9,000 crore rupees.

Following a meeting between the transport department and corporation officials, the fare hikes were implemented. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), and Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC) raised fares by an average of 23 percent. In Bengaluru, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) implemented higher average increases of 33 to 35 percent, with some short-distance fares rising by as much as 67 percent. Specifically, BMTC minimum fares increased from 6 rupees to 10 rupees.

Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar cited mounting financial losses and difficulties securing fuel funds as primary drivers, adding that the Shakti scheme, which provides free travel for women, has also increased the financial burden. He stated the government would consider reducing fares if the Central government lowers petrol and diesel prices.

The opposition BJP, led by R. Ashok, staged statewide protests against the decision. The party alleged that the state government is burdening the public due to financial mismanagement and an outstanding debt of over 5,650 crore rupees owed to the corporations. The BJP has demanded the resignation of the Transport Minister and the immediate withdrawal of the new rates.
