KB Kookmin Bank loan scandals and response

Overview

Data analyzed by National Assembly member Kim Hyung-yeon revealed that between 2022 and July 2024, KB Kookmin Bank was responsible for the vast majority of loan-related financial accidents among South Korea’s five major banks. Out of 134 total incidents totaling over 44.9 billion won, KB Kookmin Bank accounted for 124 cases, representing approximately 90.5 percent of the total value.

Investigations into the bank uncovered instances where employees allegedly participated in fraudulent activities to meet performance targets. These activities included approving loans based on forged income documents, altering documents, and using false contracts to secure loans for unsold properties or invalid rental agreements. In response, the bank pledged to strengthen internal controls through automated document collection and enhanced monitoring.

Following these revelations, KB Kookmin Bank announced the Credit Build Up interest support program. This 10 billion won initiative, donated to the Social Solidarity Bank, aims to assist vulnerable borrowers who use money lenders. The program provides interest support of up to 50 percent for eligible participants who meet specific income and payment history requirements.
