Kefalonia equine management and animal welfare crisis

Semi-wild horses on the Greek island of Kefalonia are being targeted by gunfire, resulting in multiple deaths and severe injuries. The violence follows a period of drought and food shortages in the Ainos National Park, which has forced the animals to descend to lower elevations near villages like Mavrata and Thiramonas in search of water and sustenance.

These movements have led the horses into private properties, agricultural lands, and onto roads, creating conflicts with local producers and residents. Animal welfare organizations, including ‘Adespota En Drasei – Ellas’ and ‘Stray Animals in Action’, have filed legal complaints regarding the shootings.

In response to the crisis, welfare groups have called for immediate intervention from regional authorities. Proposed solutions include implementing organized equine management plans, sterilization programs, controlled population management, and the creation of a dedicated park. While organizations have offered resources such as hay and water tanks to mitigate the animals' movement into inhabited areas, they have expressed frustration over a lack of substantive response from regional officials.
