Following his transfer from Stade de Reims to Olympique Lyonnais on September 2, 2026, Japanese international Keito Nakamura has made a significant impact. He debuted on September 16 in a UEFA Europa League victory against Anderlecht, scoring the opening goal and recording team-high statistics in chance creation and successful dribbles. Manager Paulo Fonseca praised him as an ‘extraordinary player’ with strong technical skills. Nakamura has also contributed to the Japan national team, providing a key assist in a 3-1 win over Uruguay. He expressed relief at returning to a top-five European league, noting that his previous time in Ligue 2 had impacted his standing with the national team. His club tenure has seen both success and disciplinary challenges. After appearing as a substitute in a 4-0 Ligue 1 win against Rennes, Nakamura faced mixed results during a 1-2 loss to RC Lens, where he conceded a free kick that led to a goal. On October 18, during a 2-1 win over OGC Nice, he received a straight red card just nine minutes after entering as a substitute for an unintentional strike on a defender. This dismissal led to a suspension for the subsequent match against Paris Saint-Germain. In his absence, Lyon suffered a 0-2 defeat to PSG, causing the club to drop to fifth place in Ligue 1. Media outlets noted that the absence of Nakamura, alongside injured players Loïs Openda and Pavel Schmalz, significantly reduced Lyon’s tactical offensive threats. Nakamura returned to action on November 1, making his first league start of the season in a 2-0 victory against Angers. He recorded an assist in the 86th minute and received praise from Sport.fr, which described him as an ‘incredible bargain’ for the club.
