Overview

In late July 2026 the city of Kelowna saw two major funding announcements targeting local development. On July 27, the Canadian federal government pledged $1.68 million over five years to the Strong Roots Initiative, a program aimed at Indigenous children aged six to 13 in the Central Okanagan. Managed by Childhood Connections – Okanagan Family and Childcare Society, the funds will support food assistance, cooking workshops, literacy programs, mentorship and counselling to reduce gang involvement, violence and bullying.

A day later, Okanagan College reported that its "Thrive Here" fundraising campaign had reached its $14 million goal for the Don Folk and Family Recreation and Wellness Centre on its Kelowna campus. The campaign, boosted by a $5 million lead gift and additional contributions from the city, local donors and businesses, will fund a competition‑size gymnasium, fitness suites, an indoor track and other amenities. Construction, begun in 2023, is slated for completion in fall 2026 and will serve both students and the wider community.
