Kempsey-Armidale Road reconstruction project

Overview

The Armidale Regional Council has awarded a $319 million contract to Bielby Holdings Pty Ltd for the reconstruction of the Kempsey-Armidale Road and a five-kilometre section of Lower Creek Road. The project aims to restore connectivity between the Northern Tablelands and the Mid North Coast following damage caused by 2019 bushfires and flooding in 2020 and 2022.

Funded jointly by the Australian federal and New South Wales governments under Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, the works will involve slope stabilisation, drainage improvements, retaining walls, road widening, and pavement sealing. The road has been closed to non-resident traffic since 2022.

Major construction is scheduled for 2027, with a target completion date in late 2029. The project is expected to support more than 220 local jobs during peak construction periods.
