Inspection reports from 2021 and 2022 identified significant structural and safety hazards at the Kennedy Center, including outdated fire safety systems, inadequate terrorist protection, water leaks, and hazardous materials like lead-painted steel and PCB-containing sealants. These issues were compounded by rusted wiring, roof cracks, and staffing shortages in the Project Management Office. Following these findings, the Kennedy Center extended the temporary closure of its main performing arts building. Executive director Matt Floca cited “documented hazards” and corrosion on the building’s soffits as reasons for the extension. This closure occurred alongside legal disputes regarding a judicial block on a planned two-year renovation and a contested attempt by a board to rename the facility the “Trump-Kennedy Center.” In September 2026, new allegations emerged via a letter to Congress signed by attorney David Seide on behalf of anonymous whistleblowers. The whistleblowers allege that officials, including Executive Director and COO Matt Floca, were aware of serious structural issues long before the abrupt closure and failed to prioritize roofing repairs. The letter claims that a remediation process was halted six months ago, in April, despite $257 million being earmarked by Congress in a 2025 spending bill. Matt Floca has denied these allegations, asserting that recent inspections of leaks and a partial ceiling collapse revealed new, acute hazards to public safety. The center remains under indefinite closure following a decision by a Trump-aligned governing board. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has supported the closure, citing security footage of the ceiling collapse as evidence that the building is unsafe for visitors. This follows a federal judge's ruling that the addition of the President's name to the building's facade was illegal.
