Kenya 2027 election integrity concerns
Overview
Political analysts in Kenya have warned that the 2027 General Election faces significant threats from misinformation and disinformation. Experts noted that political discourse is increasingly driven by fabricated content and emotional manipulation, which may compromise the integrity of the democratic process.
In response to these and other challenges, the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has introduced new guidelines for election coverage and a strategic plan for 2026–2030 to promote media professionalism and address issues like AI.
Concurrently, the MCK reported a rise in violence against media professionals, stating that at least 18 journalists and two drivers have been assaulted or injured by politically funded individuals. Recent incidents in Homa Bay involved physical assaults and the destruction of equipment belonging to several major media outlets. The Council has called for investigations and prosecutions to protect press freedom.
