Kenya approval of domestic banking ETF
Overview
The Kenyan Capital Markets Authority (CMA) has approved the WSA Banking Index ETF, the first exchange-traded fund to be created and domiciled within Kenya. Developed by Wallstreet Africa Group Limited and managed by Tradiam Asset Managers Limited, the fund tracks the NSE Banking Sector Index, which comprises 11 listed banks.
The ETF is scheduled to list on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) in the fourth quarter of 2026. It aims to raise between 5 billion and 7 billion Kenyan shillings, providing investors with diversified exposure to the local banking sector through a single security. This development follows a significant rally in the NSE banking sector, with indices rising over 62% since October 2025.
While the NSE has seen total valuation exceed KSh4 trillion, analysts indicate that the market still lacks diverse capital market instruments to provide long-term financing for small and medium-sized businesses, leaving many enterprises reliant on bank loans.
