Kenya is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and financing options to accelerate e-mobility adoption. SUN Mobility and Vivo Energy launched an open-architecture battery-swapping ecosystem, with 35 stations currently operational in Nairobi and Mombasa. This network supports various vehicle types, including motorcycles, scooters, tuk-tuks, and cargo three-wheelers from multiple manufacturers, aiming to reduce fuel costs by 20% to 35% compared to petrol vehicles. The shared infrastructure is attracting international interest, with at least 10 manufacturers from China, India, and Italy—including Afrina Neopower, BGauss, and Piaggio—planning to enter the Kenyan market to utilize the common network without developing proprietary systems. In tandem with infrastructure development, NCBA has partnered with BasiGo to finance the deployment of 1,000 electric vans. This initiative includes asset financing and leasing options for public transport operators and businesses, as part of a broader KES 2 billion commitment toward e-mobility financing. NCBA is offering financing for up to 90% of an electric vehicle’s asset value for public service vehicle (PSV) SACCOs and up to 80% for individual members. Additionally, fintech company M-KOPA has reached a milestone of financing over 10,000 electric motorcycles in the country. M-KOPA riders reportedly save an average of KSh530 ($4.10) daily due to lower maintenance and energy costs. The company is now expanding its pay-as-you-go financing model to include electric tuk-tuks to target the commercial transport market.
