On August 19, 2026, a Eurocopter EC130 B4 crashed near Mount Ololokwe in Samburu County, Kenya, while performing a scenic flight from the Loisaba Conservancy toward the Ewaso Nyiro area. All seven people on board, including the pilot, were killed. The victims included Michele Sensi-Contugi, the Director General of Ecuador’s National Intelligence Center, and his wife, fashion designer Stephany Hollihan. The crash also claimed the lives of five Americans, including Telemundo executive José Alberto Suárez and entrepreneur Roger Edward Duarte. Other reports indicate the deceased included six tourists and a Kenyan pilot. Following the incident, the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) and the Air Accident Investigation Department launched an investigation. Search and recovery efforts were complicated by rugged terrain and local fires. The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi is providing consular assistance to the families of the American victims. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa issued a tribute to Sensi-Contugi, describing him as a “loyal and steadfast advisor,” and declared three days of national mourning. To facilitate the repatriation of Sensi-Contugi and Hollihan, Kenyan Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Korir Sing’Oei and Ecuadorian Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Alejandro Dávalos coordinated efforts to ensure a dignified farewell. Because Ecuador lacks a diplomatic mission in Kenya, the Ecuadorian embassy in South Africa is assisting with the process. In response to the leadership vacancy, President Noboa announced that Daniel Correia will lead the National Intelligence Center in a temporary capacity. Noboa noted that a permanent director will be appointed after the current electoral campaign concludes. Previously, Luis Carlos Ávila Chávez had been designated as the acting general director. By late August, President Noboa defended the CNI against social media criticisms labeling it a “troll center,” citing the agency’s role in the capture and extradition of gang leaders such as José Adolfo Macías, known as “Fito.”
