Kenya MSME financing and digital lending expansion

Overview

Financial institutions in Kenya are expanding credit access for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) through international partnerships and digital platforms.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) initiated efforts to address the country’s financing gap by partnering with fintech lender 4G Capital. This program utilizes first-loss capital to mobilize approximately $120 million in additional lending for underserved firms, including women-owned and climate-focused businesses. Additionally, the IFC planned a $150 million loan to Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) to strengthen its capital base and expand SME credit.

Complementing these institutional investments, the Co-operative Bank of Kenya has focused on digital expansion. The bank is utilizing its mobile banking platform to provide entrepreneurs with working capital, reporting that its E-Credit platform disbursed Sh10.43 billion to MSMEs during 2025. Digital and alternative channels now represent 93.9 per cent of the bank’s transaction volumes.
