The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has conducted several high-value interceptions of undeclared electronics at major Kenyan airports. In late September, KRA officials at Eldoret International Airport intercepted a shipment containing over 52,000 undeclared smartphones, alongside premium models such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra and Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max. The authority estimated the potential revenue loss from this customs fraud at Sh50.4 million. The shipment also contained various other goods, including clothing and automotive parts. Following this, customs officers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) seized 40 undeclared iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max devices valued at approximately Ksh 8.2 million. The individual involved, traveling from Dubai, admitted to acting as a courier. This specific interception revealed that the passenger had entered Kenya four times within a nine-day period, prompting increased scrutiny of frequent short-visit travel patterns. The incidents underscore KRA enforcement of customs regulations regarding passenger allowances and the requirement to declare items intended for commercial use. Under the East African Community Customs Management Act, goods intended for resale or exceeding personal allowances are subject to import duty, VAT, and other levies. KRA has warned travellers against transporting undeclared goods on behalf of third parties.
