Kenya youth internship initiatives
Overview
The Kenyan government has introduced several initiatives aimed at addressing youth unemployment through internship programmes.
Initially, the Public Service Commission announced 6,000 internship vacancies under the second cohort of the Affordable Housing Programme. Managed by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, these roles cover 28 professional disciplines, including construction management, architecture, and various engineering fields. Interns are to be deployed to project sites nationwide for 12-month periods.
Following this, President William Ruto announced a broader paid internship scheme scheduled to begin in January 2027. This programme aims to recruit 50,000 graduates from universities, colleges, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions, providing a monthly stipend of between Ksh20,000 and Ksh25,000. The President indicated intentions to scale the initiative to 100,000 participants in the near term, with a long-term target of 200,000 youths within two to three years.
