Kenyan government infrastructure and resettlement programs

Overview

President William Ruto has announced several large-scale development and resettlement initiatives across Kenya.

In response to long-standing disputes regarding the Mau Forest, the government has released between Sh2.6 billion and Sh3.2 billion to assist 13,000 previously evicted individuals. Each person is slated to receive Ksh200,000 for resettlement. To prevent future encroachment, the President intends to manage the forest as government land and fence the entire area. Additionally, development projects in Narok County include the allocation of Ksh1.2 billion for a new university in Emurua Dikirr and the construction of a new Class B international road.

Further infrastructure plans include the announcement of a KSh4 billion smart city in Malaba, Busia County. This project aims to include 2,000 affordable housing units as part of a broader KSh18 billion allocation for Busia County. These efforts are linked to the administration’s Affordable Housing Programme, which is funded through an Affordable Housing Levy involving 1.5 percent contributions from both employees and employers.
