Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan has addressed various political and social controversies facing his administration. Initially, the Chief Minister responded to allegations regarding his connections to individuals arrested in an MDMA drug case and claims of social media censorship. He clarified that while he personally knew one of the arrested individuals, he denied pressuring Meta to remove critical news reports, stating his only formal request to the company was to restore the Chief Minister’s Office Instagram account. Following these developments, Satheesan expanded his focus to broader political and social issues. He criticized the CPI(M), alleging the party is facing internal unrest following electoral defeats. ~~On social matters, he rejected religious views advocating for the confinement of women, asserting that such stances contradict Kerala’s progressive traditions.~~ Regarding law enforcement, the Chief Minister highlighted the ‘Toofan’ anti-drug campaign and the establishment of three new special NDPS courts to accelerate drug-related trials. More recently, Satheesan has engaged in a debate regarding gender roles and religious interpretations. He rejected remarks made by Sunni Islamic scholar Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, who suggested that women should remain confined to their homes to prevent ‘great destruction’. Satheesan criticized the view as an ‘anachronism’ that contradicts Kerala’s progressive outlook. To support his stance, the Chief Minister cited historical Islamic figures, such as Khadija, Aisha, and Queen Bilqis, to argue that the scholar's views misinterpret Islamic history. CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby also condemned the remarks, stating they are contrary to the Indian Constitution and comparing the views to those expressed by the RSS.
