Kerala school quiz controversy regarding V. D. Savarkar
Overview
A controversy emerged in Kerala following a school quiz held on August 6 in the Kasaragod district. The ‘Freedom Quiz’ included a tie-breaker question asking, “Who is the freedom fighter that received the most severe punishment from the British?”, which listed V. D. Savarkar as the answer.
In response, the Kerala General Education Minister ordered a formal inquiry, noting the quiz was not an official department activity. A teacher, Guru Prasad, was suspended pending the investigation. The incident sparked political tension, with Left-affiliated groups accusing the government of allowing a ‘Sangh Parivar agenda’ to influence curriculum, while the Vishva Hindu Parishad defended Savarkar’s legacy.
The matter subsequently moved to the legal system. The Kerala High Court sought a response from the state government regarding the teacher’s suspension. The petitioner challenged the disciplinary actions, alleging they violated the Kerala Education Act. During proceedings, the court questioned whether suspension was an appropriate response, while the petitioner’s counsel argued the quiz answer was supported by historical records and Government of India documentation.
