Killing of University of São Paulo researcher

Daniel Oliveira de Andrade, a researcher from the University of São Paulo, was shot and killed while traveling on the Presidente Dutra highway in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro.

Initial reports and family accounts suggest the shooting occurred during a trip to Rio de Janeiro. The family stated that Andrade was sleeping in the passenger seat when shots were fired at the vehicle by occupants of another car. They suggested the attackers may have been attempting to hijack a truck ahead of the group and mistook the car for an armed escort. While some reports considered a traffic dispute as a possible motive, the family has contested that version.

As the investigation progressed, the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro identified an individual and requested a temporary arrest warrant, though the suspect had not yet appeared for questioning. Additionally, the victim's family leveled allegations of extortion against the Nova Iguaçu Medical Examiner's Office, claiming they were forced to pay a fee to have the body released for transport to São Paulo. The Civil Police stated that the General Internal Affairs department would investigate these extortion claims.
