Australian psychedelic band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard has released their 28th studio album, ‘Alien Metal’. The project marks a significant departure from the group’s traditional rock and progressive rock sounds, moving toward electronic dance music (EDM) and rave-inspired textures. While the album is influenced by frontman Stu Mackenzie’s exploration of modular synthesizers and industrial techno, it is also noted as the band’s first full-length album focused on EDM. This shift was primarily driven by lead guitarist Joey Walker, who has a background in dance music through the dubstep duo Trumpdisco. The group utilizes a democratic approach where members lead projects based on individual interests. ‘Alien Metal’ features diverse electronic styles, including psytrance and jungle, following previous smaller forays into the genre such as the 2022 remix album ‘Butterfly 30001’ and the 2023 electro-disco project ‘The Silver Cord’. Prior to the full release, the band issued the single ‘Kill for the Steel’, a track characterized by heavy rhythms and electronic vocals. To support the release, the band scheduled performances at their self-curated hosted the second annual Field of Vision II festival at Meadow Creek in Buena Vista, Colorado, in mid-August from August 14th to 16th, 2026. This was followed The three-day event included yoga, art, and communal activities, and featured the premiere of ‘Alien Metal’ alongside an improvised electronic modular synthesizer set by shows Stu Mackenzie. Following the festival, the group is scheduled to perform in New York at Forest Hills Stadium and Brooklyn’s Under the K Bridge Park Park, before returning to Australia in New York, with an Australian October for a tour including Sydney and Melbourne planned for October.
