Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality has initiated several programs aimed at regional development and urban improvement. In September 2026, the municipality and the Kocaeli City Council launched the ‘Kentbilim Graduate Research Support Program’. This initiative provides 4.35 million TL in funding to 60 researchers, including 10 doctoral ~~and~~ students, 20 master’s students, and 30 academic article researchers, to study various social, economic, and environmental challenges facing the city. The program covers 14 themes, including culture, smart cities, disaster management, and urban sociology. By October 2026, the municipality expanded its focus to physical ~~infrastructure, signing contracts worth approximately 2.83 billion TL for road construction, maintenance,~~ infrastructure. This included the second stage of the İlimtepe Connection Road project, which upgrades a 4.7-kilometer stretch to a 2x2 divided highway to improve transportation between Körfez and ~~intersection adjustments~~ the İlimtepe neighborhood. Additionally, the municipality began modernizing the transportation network in Gebze through intersection and road adjustments, such as work at the ~~Gebze, Darıca, Çayırova,~~ intersection of Ahmet Penbegüllü Boulevard, Anibal Avenue, and ~~Dilovası districts.~~ 1319 Street. These projects utilize materials from a municipal stone quarry and crushing-screening facility, which aims to reduce costs by producing aggregate at 50% below market prices.
