Kocaeli stork conservation and mapping initiatives
Overview
The Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality has initiated ecological monitoring and conservation efforts regarding stork populations in Turkey. Initially, the municipality focused on the individual tracking of a stork chick named Atlas, born at the Düşkün Leylekler Evi in Ormanya. In collaboration with the Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, officials fitted the bird with a satellite-GPS transmitter to record migration paths, stop-over sites, and travel distances.
This effort has expanded into the ‘Kocaeli Stork Atlas Project’. This broader initiative utilizes Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map stork nests across 12 districts, including locations on utility poles and mosque domes. The project employs a ‘citizen scientist’ model, inviting residents to contribute data and photographs via a digital platform to monitor ecological risks such as drought and habitat loss.
