Non-food discounter Kodi Handels GmbH is undergoing restructuring following its application for insolvency proceedings under self-administration in July. The company has confirmed the closure of 19 locations, all situated in North Rhine-Westphalia. Out of its 144 total branches, 69 locations are secured for continued operation, while the future of another 56 stores remains uncertain as negotiations proceed. Following the opening of insolvency proceedings under self-administration by the district court in Halle an der Saale, the company has announced a significant reduction in its retail footprint. Kodi will close 43 of its 144 locations, as well as its headquarters in Oberhausen. These closures will impact several cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, including Aachen, Emmerich, and Jülich. In larger cities such as Düsseldorf and Cologne, the company intends to maintain a majority of its existing locations. An international investor group, operating through the newly formed Kodi Retail GmbH, will take over 100 stores and continue the Kodi brand. This takeover includes the company’s inventory and other assets from the insolvent Kodi Handels GmbH. While the financial details of this acquisition remain confidential, the move is intended to provide a stable foundation for the retailer’s continuation. While many employees will retain their positions, 265 of the company’s approximately 1,200 staff members face termination. The company cited weak consumer sentiment, increased competition from digital business models, and rising costs for energy, rent, and wages as the primary drivers for the insolvency.
