A series of building collapses occurred in Kolkata following heavy rainfall. rainfall and persistent monsoon rains. On August 15, a portion of a four-storey building in the Esplanade area of central Kolkata collapsed. While the building housed bars and restaurants, a major accident was reportedly averted because the establishments were closed for Independence Day. Authorities evacuated nearby residents after cracks appeared in surrounding structures. By August 18, reports emerged of a collapse involving a 200-year-old structure in the Jorabagan area. This incident resulted in at least one fatality, identified as 50-year-old Urmila Sau, and multiple injuries. Rescue operations were conducted by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local disaster management teams. Although the Kolkata Municipal Corporation had previously declared the building structurally unsafe, some residents had continued to occupy the premises. The site has since been sealed. On September 4, a section of the balcony and roof of an old building collapsed in the Sovabazar area of North Kolkata at 66, Raja Nabakrishna Street. Local residents rescued two occupants immediately following the collapse. State fire services and disaster management teams utilized sniffer dogs to search the debris for potential pedestrians. Residents noted the building was in a dilapidated state and had been previously marked as dangerous by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. Authorities believe recent persistent rainfall and subsequent waterlogging weakened the structure.
