Turkish municipal clubs continue medal surge

In late July 2026 municipal sport clubs across Turkey continued to dominate the national Minikler youth championships. At the Minikler Wrestling Turkey Championship in Ankara, Bursa Büyükşehir Belediyespor led the medal table with 14 medals (4 gold, 1 silver, 9 bronze), while Çamardı and Yunusemre clubs added further podiums. Konya Büyükşehir Belediyespor repeated its judo success in Tokat with eight medals (2 gold, 6 bronze), and Selçuklu Belediyespor earned additional judo and wrestling placements. Niğde Gençlik ve Spor Kulübü secured 17 medals at a regional Wushu event in Malatya, and an athlete from Elazığ qualified for the Batumi Open Taekwondo tournament in Georgia, underscoring the breadth of municipal youth sport programs. The momentum extended into early August when Bursa Büyükşehir Belediyespor claimed two bronze medals in freestyle wrestling (61 kg and 79 kg) at the Büyükler Uluslararası Hasan Gemici‑Gazanfer Bilge tournament in Kocaeli. Emrah Ormanoğlu placed third in the 61 kg category, and Okan Tahtacı earned bronze in the 79 kg division. The club’s karate team also earned a bronze medal at the Şehit Eren Bülbül Turkey Club Team Karate Championship in Manisa. Later in August, the Durgunsu Canoe Turkey Championship was held in Eskişehir. Rize athletes secured the general classification championship, led by gold medalists Bedirhan Hanoğlu and Hayri Deniz Akarsu in the 1000m category. Bursa Metropolitan Municipality Sports Club also performed strongly in the canoeing event, earning a total of 12 medals, including three individual Turkey championships each for Emircan Ayaklı and Simge Kaya. In late August, Selçuklu Belediyespor’s water polo teams achieved success at the U11 and U13 Federation Cup in Manisa. The U11 team finished as runners-up in Turkey, with Faruk Erdem Akyıldız named top scorer, while the U13 team took third place after defeating Galatasaray, with Mehmet Emir Erdoğan earning the tournament’s top scorer title.
